Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

Overview

Design II is structured as two distinguishable parts - Studios dedicated to Design and studios dedicated to the introduction of Typography.

Design studios. This portion of the paper is about applying the skills and knowledge learned in Design I, Elements and Principles of Design (Drawing, Colour Theory, Photography, Historical Studies in Design and Visual Computing) to assignment work. The aim is to allow you to demonstrate your ability to analyse the brief, research and investigate the topic, and to try a variety of initial concepts before making an informed selection from which to develop an appropriately creative solution to the highest possible professional standard. You need to document the complete design process.

Typography studios. The major part of this portion of the course is based around an introduction to type and its composition within a given frame.

Paper Structure

Design studios are 2 x 3-hour studios each week. Typography studios are 1 x 3-hour studios each week. Students must attend 2 hours at each studio, selecting a critique timeslot through Moodle. Some days (as instructed through Moodle) they will be required to come for the three hours.

This equates to 6 hours per week of contact time. A 15pt paper should be considered 150 hours of work across the 12 week semester. Given this calculation, you should consider the need to do approximately 12.5 hours of work each week for DSIGN142. Therefore the expectation is that you complete approximately 6 hours of self-directed study each week outside of studios.

Attendance is compulsory and regularly scheduled assessments will be conducted during studio sessions.
